CEO Corner

Dear Hannah,

Staffing continues to be a top concern for our members and having a robust benefits and salary package is critical as firms compete for top talent. To help, MassCPAs recently launched our 2022 Compensation and Benefits Survey for public accounting firms in the state. The survey asks questions regarding staff structure, compensation levels for all staff, employee profiles, specific benefits offered and their cost.

We have engaged an independent research company to collect and report the data, protecting the privacy of each firm’s response. A survey link was emailed last week to the person at each firm who is most familiar with overall compensation and benefits. If you have any questions about the survey or need a new link, please email our survey consultant Kevin Whorton via email.

The survey will close on Monday, August 8, and all participating firms will receive a free copy of the report in mid-September. Estimated completion time is between 15 minutes and an hour or more, depending on your staff structure. The value of this study’s report is directly related to the number of participating firms. Sixty-three firms participated in our 2020 Compensation and Benefits Survey, and they were very happy with the process and final report, so I strongly encourage all firms to complete the survey.

Lastly (and because there’s never a dull moment!), the IRS is warning that identity theft scams are on the rise. To protect your clients, your organization and yourself, please refer to this guide from the Federal Trade Commission on how to recognize and avoid phishing scams.

Stay safe and have a great weekend!

Important Legislative Updates

$52 Billion FY23 Budget Signed; Updates Personal Income Tax Conformity Date
Governor Baker signed the FY23 budget yesterday, which includes an update to the Massachusetts personal income tax conformity date from the current 2005 version of the Internal Revenue Code (IRC) to the one in effect as of January 1, 2022. We are grateful to the Baker Administration, Legislature and staff members who met with us numerous times over the last few months as we advocated for this update. LEARN MORE

Information for Tax Practitioners

Below is information from the Department of Revenue (DOR) that you should know:

  1. The DOR is hearing from taxpayers about an email phishing effort that appears to be from the DOR. The phishing email states that the person named in the email may be incorrectly claiming an out-of-state location and prompts the recipient to click on a link to correct it. The hyperlink is named “Massachusetts Department of Revenue” and could easily lure some to tap it. Feel free to let your clients know of this effort. The DOR is getting the word out through some social media as well.

  2. The path to third-party access to a client’s account on MassTaxConnect will be streamlined in mid-August to only be generated by the third party and approved by the client/taxpayer. Currently, there is an option for the taxpayer to generate the third-party access through their account. That will no longer be available as of August 17.

The DOR sent out this communication to third parties on their “Third-Party Public Directory” to let them know about the change. Updates to the DOR webpages will be made on August 17 to reflect the process.
